You might be concerned, with good reason

Retirement is always the dream of the working class, and we spend our lives thinking about the day we can finally hang up our boots or close the office door for the last time.

But life moves quickly. Before you know it, you’re closer to that reality than you expected.

‘How will I afford it? I should have planned better!’

Anxiety and even a little fear are common for many Americans when retirement looms – so let’s explore a few of the biggest concerns.

Health Care. Most are unprepared for the cost of health care (which naturally goes up as we age). Many are worried their expenses will be too high. Why not prepare by creating a Medical Emergency Fund for unplanned expenses and reviewing your insurance coverage to ensure it’s a good fit?

The $ You Owe. Think you’ll have no debt when you retire? Think again. The average debt for Americans was $48,000 in 2015, according to the New York Fed Consumer Credit Panel. Start tackling consumer debt now to get a handle on it.

Income. You’re not alone if you worry that Social Security may not be enough (or even exist) when you retire. Working for a few more years past your retirement date may help you save enough to live more comfortably when you need it down the road.

Savings. If you’ve saved for retirement but are concerned you might outlive your money, you might be right. 25% of Americans over 65 can expect to live to the age of 90 (or longer). Estimate the cost of living for a long life. In the worst-case scenario, you’ll have something to leave your loved ones or charity if you save more than you need.

This information might seem overwhelming, like cleaning a full garage. It doesn’t have to be.
